Mongrels is a new adult-oriented British puppet sitcom on BBC3. This trailer was making the rounds when I was in the UK last month, and I was really disappointed that I had to leave for France the day before it premiered. Although I haven’t seen a full episode of Mongrels yet, based on the promos and clips I have seen the show looks really promising.
The series was created and directed by Adam Miller, who has high aspirations for Mongrels:
“Mongrels is an adult sitcom, trying to do for puppetry what American shows like The Simpsons have done for animation. Obviously that’s aiming very high. Think [stage musical] Avenue Q meets Family Guy, but with puppet animals.”
Now making comparisons like that is probably setting the show up for failure, especially since so far Mongrels has gotten uneven ratings, mixed reviews and even faced accusations of plagiarism. Then again, nobody seems to do adult-themed puppet shows better than the British (see Fur TV) and the puppetry in Mongrels looks great. I hope to be able to check it out for myself soon.
If you live in the UK, you can catch Mongrels on BBC3 Tuesday nights. For now the rest of us will have to make do with whatever turns up on YouTube.
