Meet The Feebles (link goes to a fantastic unofficial fan site) is a black comedy cult-classic puppet film directed by Peter Jackson (yes, that Peter Jackson) way back in 1989 that’s become well known in recent years thanks to the success of The Lord of the Rings trilogy. The film was Peter’s follow-up to his debut feature Bad Taste and was originally conceived of as a Japanese TV movie (prior to production it was hastily rewritten to make it long enough to be theatrical film).
Meant to be a low-budget parody and subversion of the Muppet Show, outside of the anything that the Henson Company has produced, it’s also one of the biggest and most ambitious puppetry feature films ever made. I recently discovered the Meet The Feebles “making of” documentary that’s embedded above on YouTube. It’s got some good stuff, including an interesting segment with Cameron Chittock, who led puppet construction on the film.
I have no idea where it’s originally from, but it appears to have been shot for television in New Zealand and was possibly an extra on one of the DVD releases of Meet The Feebles. It’s definitely not for kids or the squeamish, but if you don’t fall in to one of those two categories do yourself a favour and check it out if you haven’t already seen it.
